As the Wembley United Synagogue marks its 80th
Anniversary year, the community warmly celebrated the formal induction,
on Sunday 16 March, of its Rabbi, Simon Harris by the Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan
Sacks. In his address, the Chief Rabbi
wished Rabbi Harris a successful future with the Wembley Community inspired by
the many well-respected Rabbis that have previously served the synagogue throughout
its long and distinguished history.
In his response,
Rabbi Harris expressed his delight at having been so warmly welcomed within the
Wembley ranks and paid tribute to his wife, Alison, for being his constant
guide and supporter. He expressed his desire to be a good leader, not only
serving the needs of the local Jewish community but also to involve himself
with the wider neighbourhood, developing relationships and working alongside
other faiths.
The Synagogue was
filled with notable dignitaries from the United Synagogue including the
President, Dr Simon Hochhauser, who gave greetings, Vice Presidents Peter Zinkin
and Geoffrey Hartnell and the acting Chief Executive Stuart Taylor. Also in attendance were Lady Amelie
Jakobovits, Dayanim and Rabbonim, the Mayor of Brent, local MPs - Barry
Gardiner and Sarah Teather, other local VIPs as well as several ministers from
local Churches.
The Service, led by
Chazan Anthony Wolfson together with an enhanced choir under the baton of David
Druce, provided a very special musical and spiritual experience.
The Chairman of Wembley
Synagogue, Dr Jerome Cohen, took the opportunity to thank all those who had
participated in the service and expressed special thanks to the team from
within the Wembley Synagogue’s Board of Management who had made the event
possible. Floral presentations were made to Rebbetzin Harris and to the Chazan’s
wife, Joanna Wolfson.
Following the
service, the guests and community were entertained to magnificent tea to mark
this happy occasion.
