Started some 10 years ago, the whisky-tasting group has turned onto one of the most successful regular events to be held at the synagogue in recent years, and the tasting evenings have consistently been filled to overflowing by pious members, thirsty for knowledge. The format of the evenings has been scholarly. A series of short shiurim on each whisky together with a set of commentaries on the fundamentals of tasting have enabled each group of talmidim to progress rapidly from rather tentative beginnings to being very much at home with the subject matter. A chapter of five or six whiskies are studied during an evening, with ample time set aside for revision, in order to illuminate the main issues and points of difference. The many different attributes can be classified according to geographical location, qualities of appearance, nose, body, palate and finish, single cask compared with single malt and so on, each evaluated in the light of modern scholarship whilst at all times maintaining a firm adherence to traditional values without half measures. Concerning those who claim that many aspects of our community seem in decline, this successful and highly motivated group have shown how wrong they are.
